The Newton Bench is a exploration in form, function and concept. The natural edge Burl from the Maple tree is a beautiful example of nature’s creation at its best. From it’s alien landscape hiding beneath the bark of the natural edge to the gorgeous chaotic grain structure in its heartwood, it offers a beautiful palette to work from.

 

Enhancing the hand-carved seating and taking advantage of the natural fissures to add inlaid joinery it provides the form function and craftsmanship to this unique piece.

 

The seating is supported by a nest of separately unique Ziricote vessels that conjure interest and draw your eye downwards. These unique shapes are individually designed not to only have the appearance of a special function but to also add interest with undulating heights and fine to larger mouth openings.

 

Finishing this piece to the floor is hand sculpted copper base that mirrors the shape of the natural burl and opens with negative space from the seating to offer leg room and storage.

 

A patina was carefully encouraged to add depth, color and texture that adds an almost sea like treasure brought up from the depths of the Mediterranean.

 

Lighting enhances the patina in so many ways enriching and highlighting the special elements in the patina itself allowing it to glow under different color spectrums.

 

The lighting also enhances the vessels unique shapes and cast shadows over the area with dramatic effect.
