The Display Cabinet was designed to complement the high/low “Dining Table and Chairs” and to also stand alone as a contemporary adaptation on what was traditionally used to hold fine dinning ware and other items of value. Departing from transparent glass doors, the handmade rice paper door panels adds an element of texture and color contrast that focuses attention on the shape, size and visual elevation changes in what I call the step boxes. These boxes made from solid ruby red Bloodwood, step up and down in elevation and depth while also undulating in convex and concave lines throughout the front faces of the boxes further giving you a additional plane of depth. The box forms are all painstakingly constructed using “through dovetail” and “sliding dovetail” joinery scaled appropriately to each box lending a visual balance and depth as the boxes scale changes. This is also complicated by the fact that they all share adjoining walls. This gives the piece a much cleaner and finer look as well as showcasing the craftsmanship of the beautiful joinery and engineering.
Part of the engineering that allows the boxes to stand alone in space are the bent African Wenge ribbed, stepped or offset, arches that draw the eye down through the space to the base. Made from solid Wenge and Curly Maple, it finishes and brings these angled and curved lines together in a cohesive way. The base, following the lines from above frames the shapes and lines mirrored into a sunburst of Curly Maple that adds another level of depth and color contrast.
Looking to the interior, my clients handmade and unique dinning ware are all showcased in custom glass top drawers nestling each utensil in its own space to be viewed when closed. Glass shelves allow the custom lighting to shine through Illuminating not only the fine handmade dinnerware but also the fine art pieces that my client wishes to display. This lighting doesn’t only shine through the shelves but also illuminates the handmade rice paper panels to drawing out an additional layer of texture, warmth and effect when entertaining and dining.
